After Saving the Kittens, They Never Stop Searching for Mother Cat, Ultimately Giving Her Best Outcome

When five tiny kittens arrived at IndyHumane, volunteers quickly stepped in, caring for them day and night while hoping to find their mother. At just two weeks old, the kittens needed her more than anything. While they were kept warm, fed, and safe, the search for their mom never stopped. A few days later, joy filled the rescue as the mother cat was finally found and brought to safety—reuniting the little family at last.

The moment the mother cat was reunited with her kittens, she knew them instantly and began caring for them without hesitation. The kittens, thrilled to have their mom back, nestled close and nursed peacefully, eventually falling asleep to the gentle rhythm of her purring. “She’s incredibly sweet and devoted to her babies,” said Jennifer, a volunteer at IndyHumane.

Now safe and cozy in her new nest, Birdie showered her kittens with love, caring for them nonstop. “She’s much more at ease now and often purrs softly while nursing,” shared a volunteer. With their devoted mom beside them, the all-male litter began to thrive—growing stronger each day and hitting every little milestone along the way.

Birdie proved to be a remarkable mother—gentle, loving, and endlessly patient, making sure each of her kittens felt her affection. 

“She trusts me with her babies, which makes caring for them so much easier,” a volunteer shared. The kittens were overjoyed to be back with her, and Birdie greeted them with soft chirps the moment they returned home.

Even when Birdie took short breaks, her devotion to her kittens never wavered. “She never strays far—she doesn’t even climb the cat tree where they can’t follow. She usually wakes them when it’s time to feed or help them potty,” a volunteer explained.

 She remained close by, watching over them until they were strong, curious, and ready to venture beyond their nest.

As the kittens grew curious about their mom’s food, they began nibbling at the kibble but still favored nursing. By five weeks old, they were slowly learning to eat from a dish, though they often returned to Birdie for comfort. She welcomed them every time, patiently letting them nurse whenever they crowded around her.

The kittens quickly mastered the litter box and soon were darting around, exploring every inch of their roomy space. “It won’t be long before they figure out how to reach the higher platforms and start lounging by the window,” a volunteer said. Growing rapidly, they were clearly enjoying every moment of their playful adventures.

When the kittens—Lark, Sparrow, Finch, Wren, and Starling—were ready to leave the nest, Birdie was prepared to find her forever home. “She’s been incredibly patient and attentive with her boys, which made my job so much easier,” a volunteer shared. As her kittens grew more independent, Birdie started to play with toys and even climbed up the cat tree for the first time.

Just a few days ago, Birdie’s dream came true. “At about three years old, likely having raised several litters, she finally found her forever home where she can be loved as someone’s baby,” a volunteer shared. Meanwhile, Lark, Wren, Finch, and Sparrow were adopted in pairs, and their brother Starling is now ready for his own happily ever after.
